EquiFabula’s teaching style is pretty unique. We teach in a very involved way, and encourage our students to learn how to do everything through a no pressure method that is filled with patience and love. The concepts of instant forgiveness and infinite patience are something we talk about a lot, and it is a wildly successful method! We offer english style horseback riding lessons to all ages and abilities, and emphasize strong basics from a Centered Riding and Dressage perspective. We also love to teach jumping once the student has acquired a level of proficiency and control that allows them to learn to jump safely. We are eventers at heart, but we insist on earning the right to go big by developing a solid foundation of excellent basics first!
Most lessons are taught in the arena, but as soon as the student is able to demonstrate that they are a competent and safe rider, then we head out onto our miles of incredible trails and spend time in some deeply beautiful nature. We continuously find that this beautiful scenery, combined with the movement of the horse, is hugely beneficial for everyone, but seems to be especially powerful for people on the autism spectrum. Many families find that this time can be a welcome respite from the daily challenges of the world, and often the whole family will hike along with us as we ride through the mountains…
We schedule most of our lessons for an hour and a half so we don't have to rush through any of the steps, but that time frame is loose- sometimes kids want to ride for 20 minutes while musing about frogs and then spend the rest of the time playing with the puppies, and that is fine too! We encourage learning through whatever format the student chooses, but more importantly we are there to have a good time, so pretty much whatever makes the student happy is what we go with! We find that many kids are under tremendous amounts of pressure these days, and it’s amazing to let them determine the course of their learning process once in a while.
EquiFabula also offers group lessons, but we strongly encourage private lessons until the student is proficient in the walk, trot, and canter, and can tack up the horse completely by themselves. (This is not an industry standard, and you will find many programs that will put complete beginners in group lessons, but in our experience this is a recipe for disaster.) Once students are really safe and confident riders, then the group environment can be extremely fun, and we love having our more experienced students ride together!.
Ultimately, EquiFabula is just a place to come and play with horses, but in reality it is so much more…the bond that we have had with these animals since very early times is hugely significant. It is important to pass down the knowledge that has been handed down for centuries as we have slowly come to understand the best way to work with these creatures. It is a gift, from them to us, and it would be a shame to lose it’s powerful effects in the midst of our modern lives…
